Dedicated, compassionate and positive, Salina Branch Manager Jake Wise has embraced his community.  He’s been a member of the Capitol Federal® family since 2005, but in 2014 he moved to Salina to run the 2550 S 9th Street CapFed® branch. In just a few short years, Jake has become extremely active in the Salina community, volunteering for several fantastic organizations, including the Salina Area United Way, Salina Area Young Professionals and Smoky Hill River Festival. We asked Jake to share more about why he wants to make Salina a better place to live.

How did you get started volunteering in Salina?

Salina is a great community, and it has a lot to offer. I believe that if you are part of a community, why not help make it better? That is why I became a board member for the Salina Area United Way. They are the volunteer hub for our community and the funds raised each year have a big impact on many organizations in town. In the next few years, the city will change even more with the river renewal project and the downtown revitalization. Young professionals will lead and help shape this change, and I’m proud to be on the Salina Area Young Professionals Steering Committee. The SAYP is a wonderful way to meet a lot of great people wanting to create positive change for Salina.

Why is volunteering important?

Every organization I have been a part of is always looking for people to help contribute. Opportunities are out there, and every small act can make a huge impact on your community. If you want to improve your community, start with you - get involved! Whether it’s advocating on behalf of people with accessibility issues through the Salina Accessibility Advisory Board or helping people get out of poverty through Circles of the Heartland, find something you care about. Salina offers many diverse ways to help shape the future of our city.

What’s the best moment you’ve had as a volunteer?

The best moments I’ve had as a volunteer have been working with the Salina Area Young Professionals. I really enjoy what we have achieved since I joined in 2014. It’s exciting to develop new ideas and plan fun events for the Salina community. We’ve hosted a Street Eats and Beats event with live music, great food and kids’ activities, and we organized the Party with a Purpose, where the money raised went to a charity determined by a lip sync battle. These events promote Salina and encourage interaction between all community members. This is my home, and I want to make it the best it can be for my friends, my fellow CapFed® employees and my True Blue® customers.

Keep up the great work in Salina, Jake! You really make a difference to the community, and we appreciate all the volunteering you do on behalf of CapFed.
