Online Application Frequently Asked Questions


To help with the Online Account Opening process at CapFed®, we’ve provided answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us.

What is Online Account Opening?
It is an online application that allows new or existing customers to open various types of checking and savings accounts and certificates of deposit with Capitol Federal® online using their computer, tablet or smartphone. 

Is Online Account Opening available 24 hours a day, seven days a week?
Yes, Online Account Opening is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, however it will have limited availability each night from 11:30 pm CT to approximately 2:00 am CT.

What types of accounts can I open online?
If you are a new customer and your address for the account is in our market area (see blue shaded area below covering parts of Kansas and Missouri), you may open a checking, savings, Money Market or certificate of deposit account, not including IRAs and personal trust accounts.

If you are a new customer and your address is outside our market area (see areas outside the blue shaded area below), you may only open a savings or certificate of deposit account, not including IRAs and personal trust accounts. 

If you are an existing customer, no matter your current address, you may open a checking, savings, money market or certificate of deposit account, not including IRAs and personal trust accounts.

Capitol Federal Market Area (Areas highlighted in blue on the map below are served by Capitol Federal.) They include the following counties in Kansas:  Allen, Anderson, Atchison, Barber, Barton, Bourbon, Brown, Butler, Chase, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Clay, Cloud, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Dickinson, Doniphan, Douglas, Elk, Ellsworth, Franklin, Geary, Greenwood, Harper, Harvey, Jackson, Jefferson, Jewell, Johnson, Kingman, Labette, Leavenworth, Lincoln, Linn, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Miami, Mitchell, Montgomery, Morris, Nemaha, Neosho, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Pratt, Reno, Republic, Rice, Riley, Russell, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Smith, Stafford, Sumner, Wabaunsee, Washington, Wilson, Woodson, Wyandotte; and the following counties in Missouri: Bates, Buchanan, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Lafayette, Platte, Ray.

Is there a minimum age an applicant/joint applicant(s) must be to open an account online?  
The applicant and joint applicants must be at least 18 years or older.

How many owners can be on an account opened online?
There is a limit of four owners per account.

How many beneficiaries can be listed on an account opened online?
There is a limit of five beneficiaries per account.

What information do I need in order to complete the online application process?
New customers, existing customers and joint owners will need to provide:

  • Name 
  • Date of Birth 
  • Social Security Number
  • Email Address
  • Photo ID (US Driver’s License, US State-Issued ID, US Military Photo ID or Passport with Photo)
  • Physical Address
  • Phone Numbers 
  • Employment (Employed, Military, Retired, Self Employed and Unemployed)
For Beneficiary information, you will need to provide:

  • Name
  • Social Security Number
  • Address
How can I fund the account I opened online?
You may mail Capitol Federal® a check, complete an electronic transaction (ACH) within the application or bring a check or cash to any Capitol Federal location.

Existing customers can transfer from an internal CapFed® account. 

Is there a minimum and maximum opening deposit for each account type?
Yes.

Passcard Savings
Minimum: $100.00, Maximum: $3,000.00

Checking
Minimum: $100.00, Maximum: $1,500.00

Money Market Select
Minimum: $1,000.00, Maximum: $3,000.00

Certificate of Deposit
Minimum: $1,000.00, Maximum: $10,000.00

The limits reflect our ACH (electronic payment) limits. If you would like to deposit more, you may mail in a check for a greater amount.

How will I know if my application was submitted? 
You will receive a confirmation number at the end of the application process and the status will be pending or approved. You should also receive notice at the email address provided. If you have any questions about whether your application was submitted successfully, please call 1-888-8CAPFED or email us

What if I don’t complete my application in one session?
You will receive an email at the address provided with a link to return to your application and your application number. You may complete your application within 60 days from the date you begin the process. For CD accounts, the rate will not be locked until the account is funded at the minimum balance amount.

Can I return to my application using my confirmation number?
Yes. Select the Return to Saved Application at the top of the first screen of the application and enter your confirmation number. Click here to get started.

What if I forgot my confirmation number?
If you are a new customer, select Return to Saved Application and then select the “Forgot your Confirmation Number” link. Click here to get started.

If you are an existing customer, select Return to Saved Application and then select the “Forgot your Confirmation Number” link. You may also send a secure message through True Blue Online® banking or contact us at 1-888-8CAPFED.

How do I set up my customer PIN?
If you are an existing customer, the PIN is already set to your current PIN.

If you are a new customer, a temporary PIN is established upon successful completion and processing of a new account request. You will receive an email with instructions regarding your temporary PIN and how to reset it by calling 1-888-8CAPFED, and selecting option 6.

When will I receive a card for my new savings, checking or Money Market account?
Your new passcard or True Blue® Direct VISA® debit card will arrive to your address on file 7-10 business days from the approved date of your application.

When will I receive checks for my checking or Money Market account?
Your new checks will arrive to your address on file 7-10 business days from the approved date of your application. 

When can I log on into True Blue Online banking?
Existing customers will be converted automatically and may log into True Blue Online banking. Or you may enroll anytime after the application has been approved. The new account(s) will not show up until the application has been approved.

For new customers, use your PIN (same PIN you use at the ATM) as a temporary password when logging into True Blue Online banking. Click here for more information.
