What began as a week-long event founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in February 1926, became an annual month-long celebration to highlight African American history and culture. Black History Month officially became recognized in the U.S. in 1976 when President Gerald Ford declared February as Black History Month. Capitol Federal would like to extend an invitation to our customers and communities to come out and celebrate Black History Month.
