Good Things Happen When You Give Back

Many of us lead busy lives between work and spending time with family and friends. However, it can be worth it to find time in your schedule to give back to your community. Not only does it help strengthen the city you call home, but you’ll also see benefits in your own life.

You’ll be happier. A study by the London School of Economics showed people who regularly volunteer in their communities are 16 percent happier. Helping others has also been shown to lower stress and reduce depression and anxiety.

You can make new friends. Getting involved in a community organization gives you an opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. It may also allow you to interact with people from different walks of life and environments, opening your eyes to new experiences.

You can learn new skills. If you’re itching to learn a new skill or want to pursue a hobby you’ve always enjoyed, volunteering can be a good way to develop your talents. If you’re thinking about making a career switch, volunteering can give you an opportunity to test out a new field first.

It will help you stay healthy.
A study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that people who volunteer are more likely to use preventive health care services, such as getting cholesterol checks and flu shots. They also walk and exercise more, contributing to overall health. Volunteering will also help you keep your mind sharp as you age, helping to lower your risk of dementia.

Can you think of other ways giving back benefits your own life? Share them here!
